The Calmecac: Aztec School for Nobles and the Making of Moctezuma

from Tenochtitlan: The Aztec Capital That Shocked the Spanish — Fexingo History · host Fexingo

Before Moctezuma Xocoyotzin faced Cortés, he spent years in the calmecac, the rigorous Aztec school for noble boys. This episode explores the daily life, discipline, and curriculum of the calmecac—where future tlatoque studied ritual, law, astronomy, and warfare under the priests of Quetzalcoatl. We contrast it with the telpochcalli, the school for commoners, and discuss how the calmecac shaped the mindset of the Aztec elite. Drawing on the Florentine Codex and Bernardino de Sahagún, Lucas and Luna unpack the training that produced the high priests, generals, and rulers of Tenochtitlan, and consider what happens when a calmecac-educated emperor meets a completely alien world. #Calmecac #AztecEducation #MoctezumaII #FlorentineCodex #BernardinoDeSahagun #Telpochcalli #Quetzalcoatl #Nahuatl #Tenochtitlan #AztecNobility #Pipiltin #Macehualtin #TemploMayor #HueyTlatoani #AztecPriests #AztecWarriors #History #FexingoHistory Keep every episode free: buymeacoffee.com/fexingo
