What does "rare" actually mean in the sports card hobby anymore? A Michael Jordan Molten Metal Fusion Titanium numbered to just 40 copies reportedly sells privately for nearly $1 million, sparking a fascinating debate. To an ultra-modern collector accustomed to cards numbered to 10, 5 or even one-of-ones, is /40 really rare? To a 90s collector, /40 can be extraordinarily rare. And to a vintage collector, rarity may have an entirely different meaning. Chris McGill of Card Ladder brings the question to the Sports Cards Live panel and we go deep. We discuss manufactured scarcity versus organic rarity, print runs versus actual surviving populations, how often a card actually becomes available, and the enormous difference between a card being technically rare and being truly scarce. We also explore the importance of substitutes. There may only be 40 copies of one particular Michael Jordan card, but how many other desirable Jordan cards exist from that same season?
