In The Count of Monte Cristo, the Carnival on the Corso comes to an abrupt close as the bell sounds and the masquerade disperses. The carriages break formation in an instant, and Franz and Albert find themselves carried back through Rome, the day’s encounters already slipping away.   The Count has vanished from the Rospoli Palace, leaving only arrangements behind, including access to his box at the Argentina.
