The Cast of Christmas — The Angels

Why do we do what we do at Christmas? Continuing the cast of Christmas series with the angels, this message reads the symbolism behind familiar traditions — the red of blood, white of purity, green of everlasting life, lights, and gifts — before turning to the angels' proclamation in Luke 2:13–14 . The peace announced is shown to be far bigger than world peace or family harmony: it is peace with God through the forgiveness of sin, illustrated by the sinful woman of Luke 7 who heard “go in peace.” The challenge moves outward to peacemaking versus peacekeeping. Drawing on Matthew 5:9 and James 3:17–18 , it presses listeners to become proclaimers of peace — even toward difficult family members — remembering that hurt people hurt people and that the wisdom from heaven precedes the interaction.
