Eddie Caylin died in a mysterious car fire just six weeks after his wife arranged a five thousand dollar policy with double indemnity, with only one premium paid and the widow as beneficiary. District salesman Presley Welch, a nervous rabbit of a man also plagued by asthma, confesses he should have known better than to write the policy. Eddie treated the whole thing as a joke, only signing to please his wife, laughing about needing security like "two aces up and one for the kicker."Detective Sergeant Jose Reynosa fills Johnny in on the disturbing details. Eddie's car was found burned in a ravine on Palas Verdas headland, the body inside charred beyond recognition, possibly with gasoline deliberately poured throughout. Even more troubling, the Caylin apartment showed signs of a violent struggle with broken furniture and bloodstains. Mrs. Caylin claims she was alone at a friend's cabin at Arrowhead when her husband died, but nobody can confirm her alibi.
