She reveals that Eddie frequented bars like the Eloinees and the Brass Monkey Inn, and mentions that his closest friend, Pete Steimer, has disappeared since the night of the murder. The police believe Eddie was killed for the large sum of money he won from a gambler named Topo Lanely. As the interview continues, Mrs. Kalin employs what Johnny recognizes as a familiar tactic, changing into something more comfortable and switching to a friendlier approach. She describes her turbulent relationship with Eddie as a "ten-ring circus from the front seat in a roller coaster," acknowledging his many affairs with showgirls while admitting she still can't believe he's really dead.
