At the apartment of Marty Midnight, a strip club performer, Johnny explains to Sergeant Reynosa how he deduced Eddie was alive all along. The locked apartment door on the night Eddie supposedly died was the crucial clue—only Eddie himself would have locked it out of habit while fleeing. Johnny theorizes that Eddie killed Mike Kelso in self-defense, then burned Kelso's body in his own car to fake his death and escape with sixty thousand dollars in poker winnings. Eddie and Pete Steiner had been hiding with Marty, planning to flee the country.Now Eddie is genuinely dead, shot in Marty's apartment, and both she and Pete have vanished with the money. The investigation takes a turn when Jeanette Dubois, a French neighbor, arrives to give her eyewitness account. She saw Marty emerge from the apartment in a white raincoat immediately after the shots, wiping something down before throwing it back inside and fleeing into the night.
