In the summer of 1998, on a back road outside of Shiloh, Arkansas, I saw a woman playing a cello at the edge of a field at midnight. No car. No house nearby. Just her, the instrument, and the highway. The next night she was gone, but the music stayed. A slow, deep note that vibrated through the windshield and into my chest. I didn't stop. I wish I had.
