In October 1997, a young census taker named Della Mayhew drives up into the mountains of Yancey County, North Carolina, to verify a remote address on Spruce Pine Gap Road. The house at the end of the gravel lane is not on any map she has seen. The woman who answers the door is expecting her — has been expecting her for a long time. Inside, the rooms are wrong: too many doors, a grandfather clock ticking in a language Della doesn't recognize, a photograph on the mantel that shows Della herself, aged fifty years, standing beside a woman she has never met.
