While his fellow officers dismiss the miracle as wine-induced gossip, Longinus understands that if the people believe it, the political consequences for Rome will be very real. While patrolling the Temple quarter, Longinus eavesdrops on a clandestine meeting of powerful leaders who view Jesus as a strategic threat. They fear his "Messiah" status will provoke a Roman crackdown that would destroy their nation. Realizing they cannot arrest him for his good deeds, they pivot to a charge of blasphemy, plotting to use the machinery of Rome to execute him.
