The CFL’s deal with FanDuel is just the first act, and an update on the Quebec gaming coalition
The Canadian Football League’s just-announced partnership with FanDuel is the beginning of the league rolling out its sports betting strategy. That comes from our conversation this week with Owen Welsh, the CFL’s associate VP of sports betting, gaming and innovation. Welsh explained the opportunities around the new deal with FanDuel, and the ties of the partnership to both TSN and Genius Sports. He also discussed the league’s coordination with its nine members clubs in the gambling space, which includes the highly-competitive sports betting and igaming market in Ontario, and a monopoly of sorts for provincial lottery and gaming corporations across the rest of the true north, strong and free. Nathalie Bergeron, the spokeswoman for the Quebec Online Gaming Coalition, was also our guest and provided an update on the group’s efforts to persuade elected officials in La Belle Province to bring in a regulated industry.
