The Challenger Deep - Part 3: The first human descent into darkness

Decades of exploration and curiosity had led to this moment. The day had arrived when human beings would sit inside a small metal sphere and descend into the ocean's depths. Above, the ship pitched in the swell, ropes creaked under the strain, and the wind whipped salt spray across the deck.Technicians leaned on the rail, their faces smeared with oil, testing gauges and microphones. The atmosphere was electric with anticipation. When the sphere was swung over the stern and slipped free, it made no sound. The descent was a surrender to weight, a gradual plunge into silence. As the vessel sank, surface noises thinned and fell away.
