from The Charlie James Show Podcast
In the second segment of Hour 1 of The Charlie James Show on September 8, 2026, host Charlie James interacts with several callers to discuss a controversial local PAC commercial regarding open versus closed primaries in South Carolina, reasserting that the vast majority of local Republicans favor closing them. Callers also discuss the geopolitical and economic implications of rising fuel costs, contrasting modern public reluctance toward temporary economic sacrifice with the historical sacrifices of past generations during times of conflict. The conversation covers foreign policy tensions with Iran, debating the risks of nuclear proliferation and potential diplomatic or military strategies, before concluding with local reports on regional gas price variations and an upcoming topic regarding 9/11 families.

Full Transcript Charlie James: All right, I'm going to keep lis—listening out for that, um, that ad about the open primaries. I know for a fact that the vast majority—I'm talking about 74, 75, in some cases 80%—of Republicans in South Carolina want the primaries closed. Let's go to Dave in Roebuck. Dave, welcome. Dave: How you doing this morning, Charlie? Charlie James: I'm doing good, bud. What's going on? Dave: I'm just so glad I was able to get on because I was more or less in line with the last caller you had. And, um, I just want—I've been—I've been asking this question to a lot of people who've been complaining about the high gas prices and the subsequent other goods, uh, prices, and I understand that, and I'm not happy with it either. But the question is: is if if Trump did not do anything at all in Iran and Iran was able to develop a nuclear weapon— Charlie James: Yeah. Dave: —would they be willing to gamble on a nuclear device being detonated over New York, Washington, D.C., pick a pick a city? Would they be willing to gamble that just because of a few higher prices temporarily? Charlie James: Oh, yeah. Dave: I don't think so. I mean, I I just think that a lot of people today, they're not willing to sacrifice like the previous caller was speaking about. Charlie James: No. No, not not like—I mean, my grandparents, they they had tin drives, they had silk drives, they had scrap metal drives, they they had food rationing stamps. Dave: Exactly. Exactly. And I would just ask this question to those people. Uh, I said: what would you say to the dead? Now, we're talking about a nuclear device uh technology today that would make the Hiroshima bomb look like a firecracker. Charlie James: Yeah. Dave: Okay, what would you what would these people say to the dead? Charlie James: "Well, you know, we like $2-a-gallon gas." Dave: Well... Charlie James: You know? Dave: What does that what does that tell you about people today? Charlie James: It's scary. It is scary. Boy, I tell you what. Uh, you're right about that, Dave. I appreciate it. Let's go to Steven in Piedmont. Steven, welcome. Steven: Hey, Charlie. How you doing? Charlie James: I'm good, man. What's up? Steven: All right. So my thing is, which obviously, you know, it's been said a million one times, you know, uh it's not just the price of gas going up, it's the price of food and everything else that's going up. But as far as the people saying like, are you fine, you know, with Iran having a nuclear weapon, didn't they say that they destroyed their nuclear capabil—capabilities, and if so, why are we still over there? If it's if it's such a thing? Which I understand, you know, the whole uh Strait of Hormuz and all the other stuff, but— Charlie James: Right. Steven: —if that's the whole main thing for us to go over there was nuclear weapons, why are we still over there causing such a racket as causing a shockwave in the economy? Charlie James: Because they've still got allies. They've got people like China and ultimately even Canada that are trying to funnel money to them to get that program restarted. Steven: I understand that, but— Charlie James: They They have still—now, listen, wait a minute, they have still not agreed to not pursue a nuclear weapons program. Steven: And you know they're not going to agree to that. They're not ever going to agree to any deal that we try to take, besides a full total, full uh pullout of us being over there. Charlie James: So So what should we do? Steven: Honestly, the best thing we can do is really, which I heard somebody say before, is basically Trump can declare to the American people that we won, pull out, and then do like a side a side bargain with them and be like, "Hey, we're going to pull out, we're going to go ahead and unfreeze your assets as long as y'all, you know, reopen the straits." Which, yeah, it's going to look bad on Trump, you know, cuz they cuz, you know, obviously they're going to, you know, ...
