The Children of God, founded in 1968 by leader David Berg, started out with good intentions, but grew more sinister and perverse as Berg rose to power. Sexual abuse against children was systemic as well as physical abuse and isolation from the outside world. Actors River Phoenix and Rose McGowan were even former members, speaking out later about the abuse they witnessed/suffered.
