It was through this pipeline that Ben began acquiring the Nomoli figures — soapstone carvings that locals believe were left by gods who fell from the heavens. The suppression operates on multiple levels. Radical Muslim and Christian missionaries in West Africa have systematically destroyed Nomoli stones, labeling them demonic and pagan. Village chiefs who once protected these artifacts now hide them or hand them over to be destroyed to avoid persecution. Academically, African professors distance themselves from the tribal practices associated with the stones, fearing they will not be seen as modern or civilized.
