When our pastor asks me to take speaking duties for a Sunday, I get so excited. I love the research and study put into each sermon. Coming up with personal stories relating to scripture is easy for me. Last Sunday, however, was a bit different. The text to cover was Acts 1:8: But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all of Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. No big deal, right? Just say what it means to live what Jesus taught in places you’re comfortable, in your community, in a land where people hate you, and in countries you’ve never visited or speak the language. No problem, God. I interviewed author, Tim Keller, last week and asked What does it take to create a great sermon? He answered, Prepare. You can’t force the Holy Spirit to come, but you can build the best alter you can and pray he shows up. This is the alter I built. Grab your headphones, a cup of tea and get comfortable.
