The Church in its unity speaks in the language of every nation

from Treasures of Our Faith with Deacon Richard Vehige

On Saturday the Seventh Week of Easter our Church invites us to first read and reflect on a passage from the third letter of the apostle John entitled "Let us live in the truth". Our treasure, which follows, is from a sermon by a sixth century African author. Although the specific author is unknown, it is likely that this sermon is from Fulgentius of Ruspe a prominent sixth century figure known for his theological writings. He was a bishop in North Africa and a key figure in transmitting and defending Augustinian theology, particularly during a period of Vandal rule and persecution.  In our "treasure" today, the sermon "The Church in its unity speaks in the language of every nation" teaches that through the gift of the Holy Spirit, the Church is united as one body while embracing people from every culture, language, and nation. Just as the apostles spoke in many tongues at Pentecost, the Church continues Christ's mission by proclaiming the Gospel to the whole world. The main message is that true unity in the Church does not erase human differences; rather, the Holy Spirit gathers diverse peoples into one faith, one communion, and one mission centered on Jesus Christ. The main message of our first reading from the Third Letter of John is that authentic Christian faith must be shown not only in correct belief but in faithful action. John praises Gaius for living in the truth by showing hospitality, generosity, and support for those serving the Gospel. He contrasts this with selfish, prideful behavior that seeks power rather than service. The letter teaches that believers should imitate what is good, walk faithfully in truth, and build up the Church through love, humility, and practical care for others.
