When people in Ephesus turned from handmade gods to Jesus, an idol-making business and the city’s identity came under threat. Their angry riot shows how fiercely people defend whatever supplies meaning, security, or satisfaction. Even good gifts can take God’s place. People were made to worship, so idols cannot simply be switched off.
