The Compassion and Love of Christ

There are many words that are used to describe the character of our Lord Jesus Christ. He is holy, righteous, faithful, gracious, merciful, and true. Yet among all these glorious attributes, two shine brightly throughout His earthly ministry: His love and His compassion.Everywhere Jesus went, He demonstrated both. He loved people, and He showed compassion toward them. He loved the sinner, and He acted on behalf of the sinner. His love was not merely spoken; it was displayed. His compassion was not merely felt; it was demonstrated.The greatest evidence of Christ’s love and compassion is found at Calvary. When Jesus died upon the cross, He willingly gave Himself for those who were undeserving, rebellious, and sinful. He shed His precious blood so that sinners could receive forgiveness, pardon, and eternal life.John 15:13 declares, “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.”I. Understanding the Difference Between Love and CompassionBefore we examine Christ’s example, we must understand the difference between love and compassion. Love is the affection of the heart. Compassion is love in action. Love feels the burden. Compassion carries the burden. Love sees the need. Compassion meets the need. Love is the emotion. Compassion is the expression.Throughout Scripture, compassion, mercy, and pity are closely connected. Compassion is more than simply feeling sorry for someone. It is being moved deeply enough to do something about their suffering.Many people may feel sympathy for another person, but Christ’s compassion always resulted in action.When He saw the hungry, He fed them. When He saw the sick, He healed them. When He saw the sorrowful, He comforted them. When He saw sinners perishing, He went to the cross. The cross is where divine love and divine compassion meet perfectly.II. The Nature of Christ’s LoveA. His Love Is UnchangeableJohn 13:1 says, “Having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.” Human love often changes. People love when circumstances are favourable. People love when relationships are easy. People love when they receive something in return. But Christ’s love never changes. The disciples often misunderstood Him. They failed Him. They doubted Him. Peter denied Him. Yet Jesus loved them to the end.The same is true for believers today. His love does not increase when we succeed. His love does not decrease when we fail. His love remains constant because it is rooted in His perfect character. What comfort there is in knowing that the Saviour who loved us yesterday loves us today and will love us forever.B. His Love Is DivineJohn 15:9 says, “Just as the Father has loved Me, I have also loved you; abide in My love.” Christ’s love originates in God Himself. It is not earthly love. It is not selfish love. It is not temporary love. It is divine love.The love that exists between the Father and the Son is perfect, eternal, and holy. Jesus says that He loves His people with that same divine love. This means His love is beyond human measurement.We can never fully comprehend its depth, height, length, and breadth. The love that brought Christ from heaven to earth is divine love. The love that kept Him on the cross is divine love. The love that still intercedes for us in heaven is divine love.C. His Love Is Self-SacrificingJohn 15:13 says, “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” Love is measured by sacrifice. The greatest demonstration of Christ’s love was not His miracles. It was not His teaching. It was not His power. It was His death. Jesus willingly laid down His life. No one forced Him. No one overpowered Him. He voluntarily gave Himself. The nails did not hold Christ on the cross. Love held Him there. Every drop of blood that flowed from His body testified to His love for sinners.D. His Love Is InseparableRomans 8:35 says, “Who will separate us from the love of Christ?” Paul then lists tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, danger, and sword. Yet none of these can separate the believer from Christ’s love. Circumstances change. People change. Health changes. Fortunes change. But Christ’s love remains unchanged. Nothing can break the bond between Christ and those He has redeemed.III. Christ Showed CompassionA. Compassion for the Weary and Heavy-LadenMatthew 11:28-30 says, “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest.” The world is filled with weary people. Some are burdened by sin. Some are burdened by guilt. Some are burdened by fear. Some are burdened by life’s troubles. Jesus does not turn them away. He invites them to come.His compassionate heart reaches out to the weary soul and offers rest. No burden is too heavy for Him. No sinner is beyond His grace.B. Compassion for the TemptedHebrews 2:18 says, “For since He Himself was tempted in that which He has suffered, He is able to come to the aid of those who are tempted.” Jesus understands our struggles. He knows the reality of temptation. Though He never sinned, He experienced temptation and suffering. Therefore He is able to help those who are battling temptation today. What a compassionate High Priest we have. He does not merely observe our struggles. He comes to our aid.C. Compassion for the AfflictedLuke 7:13 records the widow of Nain grieving over the death of her only son. The Bible says, “When the Lord saw her, He felt compassion for her.” Jesus saw a broken-hearted mother. He felt her pain. He entered into her sorrow. Then He raised her son from the dead. Our Lord is still compassionate toward those who suffer. He sees every tear. He knows every sorrow. He understands every heartache.D. Compassion for the PoorMark 8:2 says, “I feel compassion for the people because they have remained with Me now three days and have nothing to eat.” The compassion of Christ extends to practical needs. He cared about hungry people. He cared about hurting people. He cared about ordinary people. The Lord notices needs that others overlook. Nothing is too small for His attention. Nothing escapes His compassionate gaze.IV. Christ Showed LoveA. He Came to Seek the LostLuke 19:10 says, “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.” The initiative was His. Lost sinners were not seeking Him. He came seeking them. Love came down from heaven. Love entered our world. Love searched for those who were wandering far from God. Christ’s mission was a mission of love.B. He Prayed for His EnemiesLuke 23:34 says, “Father, forgive them; for they do not know what they are doing.” Consider the scene. The crowd mocked Him. The soldiers crucified Him. The religious leaders rejected Him. Yet He prayed for them. This is love beyond human understanding. Most people pray against their enemies. Jesus prayed for His enemies. Such love reveals the greatness of His heart.C. He Gave Himself for UsGalatians 2:20 says, “The Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.” Christ did not merely give possessions. He gave Himself. He gave His body. He gave His blood. He gave His life. Every believer can say with Paul, “He loved me and gave Himself for me.” This makes the love of Christ deeply personal.D. He Washed Away Our SinRevelation 1:5 says, “To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood.” The cross accomplished what no religion could accomplish. It removed the guilt of sin. It satisfied the justice of God. It secured eternal redemption. The blood of Christ cleanses the sinner completely. His love provided what His compassion desired. He wanted sinners saved, and He paid the price Himself.V. The Greatest Display of Love and CompassionAll the miracles of Christ reveal His compassion. All His teachings reveal His love. But the cross reveals both perfectly.At Calvary:· Love endured the nails.· Love endured the mocking.· Love endured the crown of thorns.· Love endured the darkness.· Love endured the judgment of God against sin.Compassion looked upon lost humanity and refused to leave them without hope. Christ saw our helpless condition. He saw our guilt. He saw our condemnation. He saw our inability to save ourselves. Then He willingly took our place. The cross is God’s declaration that He loves sinners. The empty tomb is God’s declaration that Christ’s sacrifice was accepted.ConclusionJohn 15:13 reminds us, “Greater love has no one than this, that one lay down his life for his friends.” The love of Christ is unchangeable. The love of Christ is divine. The love of Christ is self-sacrificing. The love of Christ is inseparable. His compassion reached the weary. His compassion reached the tempted. His compassion reached the afflicted. His compassion reached the poor. Ultimately, His love and compassion reached all the way to the cross. The question today is not whether Christ loves sinners. The cross has already answered that question.The question is: Have you responded to that love? If you have never trusted Christ, come to Him today. If you are burdened, come to Him. If you are weary, come to Him. If you are broken, come to Him. The Saviour who died for sinners still invites people to come. And all who come to Him in faith will find forgiveness, mercy, compassion, and everlasting love. This is a public episode.
