The Concession Stand at Beaver Lake

It's late August, just before midnight, and I'm parked at the Beaver Lake public beach outside of Mercer, Ohio. The season is over — the water is still as glass, the lifeguard chair is chained up, and the concession stand is dark. But I saw someone walk past it. Then I saw the light come on inside. I didn't get out. I just sat there, engine off, watching through the bug-splattered windshield. The girl behind the counter — she moved like she'd been doing it for decades, wiping the same countertop, ringing an old cash register that didn't make a sound. She wasn't alone. There was a boy leaning against the condiment counter, and I swear I recognized him from a missing persons poster I'd seen at the gas station three towns back.
