The Confessions - Book 05

from Church Fathers and theologians - The theology of Creation

St. Augustine's Confessions, Book V recounts the period when Augustine was 29 years old. During this time, he was exposed to the teachings of the Manicheans but ultimately rejected their doctrines. Augustine was particularly impressed with Faustus, a Manichean bishop known for his eloquence, but he came to realise that Faustus lacked knowledge in the liberal arts and was not able to provide answers to his questions about the universe. Augustine found himself attracted to the teachings of the Academics, who questioned the possibility of knowing truth, and he began to doubt the Manichean teachings. He also found himself drawn to the Catholic faith, particularly through the sermons of the Bishop Ambrose, but he still harboured doubts about the Incarnation and the validity of the Bible. Ultimately, Augustine decided to become a catechumen in the Catholic Church while he continued to search for the truth. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
