from Unspoken Emotions · host Rachel Elimelech

Today, Rachel invites Sam Halliwell, a trauma-informed endometriosis coach, to share her deeply personal journey with endometriosis, chronic pain, and the emotional toll of living with a chronic illness. Sam discusses her early health struggles, the challenges of being dismissed by medical professionals, and the impact of her diagnosis on her identity as a woman.  KEY TAKEAWAYS Emotional Impact of Chronic Illness: Living with endometriosis can lead to significant emotional distress, including feelings of being dismissed by medical professionals and the struggle to be believed about one's pain. Connection Between Trauma and Pain: There is a strong link between emotional trauma and chronic pain conditions like endometriosis. Addressing underlying emotional issues can lead to improvements in physical symptoms, highlighting the importance of a holistic approach to treatment. Importance of Self-Advocacy: The journey to diagnosis and treatment can be fraught with challenges, including being dismissed by healthcare providers. Individuals must advocate for themselves and seek second opinions when their concerns are not being taken seriously. Holistic Healing Approaches: Integrating dietary changes, somatic work, and emotional healing practices can significantly impact the management of endometriosis. Identity and Motherhood: The experience of infertility and the decision to undergo a hysterectomy can profoundly affect one's sense of identity as a woman.  BEST MOMENTS "I was in a lot of pain. I was really struggling just day to day, quite simple things." "The average diagnosis for endo is considerably high. At the moment, the average is eight years, 10 months for diagnosis." "I was living in a permanent fight or flight. I was literally fighting my body every single day." "If I go into a surgery like this in this state, I just won't make it." "There is no cure. This disease has such a high recurrence rate that there is no cure." Empowered by Darkness Andrea Medina Hi, I’m Andrea Medina. Though I’m in my early 20s, the history of relational trauma in my family lineage coupled with my own father’s abuse and abandonment, has instilled in me a self-awareness and sensitivity to emotions from a young age. I was born in México and raised in Compton, a community where I didn’t have many mentors or influences that pointed me in the direction of emotional healing work. Still, I went on to publish The Energized Self: A Journey to Interconnected Healing, a book that is half memoir and half conversations with trauma survivors at the age of 22. This same year I began my public speaking journey and my master’s program to become a Marriage and Family Therapist. As I find myself rising to fulfill my soul’s calling today, I am still in the same location where conversations like the ones had in this podcast aren’t common. I’m also faced with a myriad of economic and social challenges that I know listeners will relate to. My goal is that Never Alone Infertility Morgan and Madison Never Alone is a podcast for women navigating infertility, loss, and everything in between. We’re two friends whose paths intertwined during our own walks through infertility, and we understand how isolating and overwhelming the process can be. From the uncertainty of IVF to the heartache of miscarriage and the patience required in moments of waiting, we’re here for you.Join us each week as we have real and raw conversations about the challenges and emotions of walking through infertility and loss – both from our own experiences and speaking with other women. We’re glad you’re here, and hope you feel seen, supported and most of all know that you’re never alone. THINK BIGGER, THINK BETTER Paul Gibbons THINK BIGGER, THINK BETTER presents the 21st century’s leading entrepreneurs, scientists, philosophers, public intellectuals, and business and political leaders as they discuss the most important issues of today.
