October 2019. A Tuesday night. I went with a photographer named Jess to an abandoned grain elevator on the north edge of Millbrook, a concrete tower against a bruised sky. We expected rusted machinery and silence. What we found was a basement door painted copper — not a shade of neglect, but bright, polished, recent. It opened onto a narrow staircase that led to a room that shouldn't have existed. A cot. A table. A telephone on the wall, receiver cradled. The line was dead, but the phone rang anyway. Jess picked it up. He listened for ten seconds, then hung up and said, 'That was my mother.' His mother had been dead for seven years. The phone was disconnected in the late eighties.
