The Count of Monte Cristo
from Lux Redux: Hollywood's Timeless Theater
Originally Aired: February 6, 1939 Lux Radio Theater #205, "The Count of Monte Cristo," stars Robert Montgomery and Josephine Hutchinson in Alexandre Dumas's classic tale of betrayal and revenge. Edmund Dantes, a young and honest sailor, returns to Marseille after completing a secret mission for the exiled Napoleon. Newly promoted to captain of the Pharaon by owner Monsieur Morel and joyfully reunited with his beloved Mercedes, Dantes stands on the threshold of happiness. However, his good fortune ignites jealousy in those around him, particularly the resentful Danglar, who questions Dantes's fateful stop at Elba, and Fernand, who harbors his own love for Mercedes. As Dantes celebrates his homecoming and impending marriage, dangerous forces conspire against him. The innocent delivery of a letter from Napoleon becomes the instrument of his destruction, setting in motion a tale of wrongful imprisonment, mysterious transformation, and an elaborate quest for justice. With a star-studded cast including Lewis Stone, Lloyd Nolan, Sidney Blackmer, and Paul Lucas as the conspirators, this adaptation brings Dumas's epic story of one man's journey from despair to vengeance vividly to life.
