The Court You Keep

from A Soft Place To Land

The first clean morning is not always peace. Sometimes it is sight. The old film is off your eyes, and you can finally name the rooms you used to live in. Mercy has spoken. Then you drag the file back in and open court anyway. Brian Hahn sits with that second courtroom. God closed the case. The second judge is often you. Saul gets his sight and the old life is still in the frame. Paul can call himself the worst and still be appointed. Peter meets a charcoal fire and a question, not a gavel. A woman ruins a dinner with her tears and is told to go in peace. David asks for joy after the worst night. John Newton looks back once, as a pattern, not a performance. None of them is asked to out-judge the Judge who bled for them. You will hear a kind sentence in a lot of rooms: you have to forgive yourself. It sounds merciful. It is not in the Book. Confess. Repent. Come. There is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ. What is not there is a third sacrament in which you climb into God’s chair and issue yourself a pardon He has already spoken. Consequences may still be on the lawn. A marriage to rebuild. A name you cannot say without flinching. Condemnation is not the same thing. The Cross does not ask you to call evil a misunderstanding. It asks you not to build a second gallows after God has taken the first one down. This is not a debate and it is not a rally. A Soft Place to Land is a faith-based conversation that is encouraging and unhurried — a safe space from political anger. You do not have to finish paying. You do not have to keep the file on the table as proof you are serious. You can come down off the bench. One sentence to carry out of the room: He closed the case. I do not have to keep the court. If the old file opens in the middle of a song, tell one wise believer. Not a crowd. Not the internet. A person who will not flatter you and will not nail you back to a door Christ already opened. Then draw near. A pardoned person is allowed to serve. A pardoned person is allowed to sing. A pardoned person is allowed to sleep. The written word behind this conversation lives at jaxsonharlan.com, under the title “The Court You Keep.” Come back next time. We will keep the light on. Hosted by Brian Hahn. From Jaxson Harlan Ministry / Jaxson Radio. May you go from here unhurried. May you remember you are held. And if the hallway looks safer than the table, may you remember that the sight is not the sentence. Leave the gavel on the table. The hillside still has a cross on it, and it is not waiting for you to finish paying. If the public-page card truncates and you want a short version in the summary field: After mercy arrives, some of us build a second court and try the old life again. God closed the case. The second judge is often you. Come out of the court you keep. A Soft Place to Land, with Brian Hahn.
