The Covenant

THE COVENANT Would you build a vessel of wood To save me from the flood? To save you from the flood I would not build a vessel of wood Would you forge a hammer of steel To break the slaver’s chain? To break the slaver’s chain I wouldn’t forge a hammer of steel Would you sacrifice ten good men To punish all those who sinned? To punish those who sinned I would sacrifice ten good men CHORUS All our ancestors They heeded the call Duty, sacrifice Call it what you will We’re custodians We don’t own this place We signed this covenant It’s not ours to waste Would you forego a banquet royal To feed the perishing? To feed the perishing I wouldn’t forego a banquet royal Would you fight a cruel oppressor To keep your children free? To keep my children free I wouldn’t fight a cruel oppressor Would you build a vessel of wood To save me from the flood? To save you from the flood I would not build a vessel of wood And all our ancestors They heeded the call To pass on to their sons And daughters a place to dwell Duty, sacrifice Call it what you will We signed this covenant To leave them a better world
