They had one job. The Roman guard was to make sure Jesus stayed dead and buried in the tomb. After all, what a scandal it would be if Jesus’ disciples were to come and steal the body! But as it turned out the real scandal is this—imagining you could actually cover up what God wanted to reveal to the world – an empty tomb.
