The Coweta Case: Murder in Georgia

from Moms and Mysteries: A True Crime Podcast · host Moms and Mysteries Podcast

In Prohibition-era Georgia, one man ruled Coweta County with an iron fist: John Wallace, a ruthless moonshiner and criminal boss who murdered with impunity and controlled local law enforcement through fear and corruption. In April 1948, Wilson Turner, a cattle farmer, made the fatal mistake of crossing John Wallace. When Turner was released from jail on unrelated charges, Wallace and three accomplices ambushed him on Highway 41, chased him down, and brutally murdered him. But this time, Wallace made a critical error: he dumped Turner's body across the county line in Meriwether County—outside his sphere of influence. Sheriff Lamar Potts of Meriwether County was not under Wallace's control, and he was determined to bring the powerful criminal to justice. What followed was a landmark investigation and trial that exposed decades of corruption, violence, and unchecked power in rural Georgia. The Coweta Case became one of the most famous murder trials in Georgia history. This episode explores the reign of terror John Wallace inflicted on Coweta County, the murder of Wilson Turner, and the sheriff who finally brought a killer to justice.
