The Cracks in the Glass: Why Apple’s Vision Pro Retail Strategy Stumbled

from Phonegram News

The Apple Vision Pro was meant to be the crown jewel of spatial computing, but it seems the launch was more of a spatial stumbling due to how Apple is managing its most important asset: the people in the blue shirts. According to Noam Scheiber’s new book, "The Rebellion," the magic of the Apple Store has been fading as the focus shifts from Steve Jobs’ philosophy of a well-compensated, inspired workforce to Tim Cook’s era of cost-cutting and rigid sales metrics. Instead of the deep, interactive training we used to see, store employees are now being pushed through quick, self-paced modules, leaving them ill-equipped to handle a device as complex and expensive as the Vision Pro. The training for this $3,500 marvel was surprisingly thin, with some staff getting only twenty minutes of hands-on time before being thrown to the customers. This lack of preparation led to botched demos where customers were fitted incorrectly, resulting in blurry visuals and a poor first impression of a product that costs as much as a used car. To make matters worse, the secrecy was so intense that employees had their phones confiscated during training, yet when they got back to the floor, they were eventually reduced to reading scripts off iPads. It is hard to create a magical moment when the person across from you is acting like a retail robot. The numbers tell a sobering story for us fanboys. While the Apple Watch sold ten million units in its first year, the Vision Pro did not even crack five hundred thousand in 2024. In some stores, returns were so high that sales actually went into the negative. The irony is that most of the people selling the device cannot even afford to buy one themselves, even with their employee discount. If Apple wants to reclaim its retail throne, it might need to stop looking at the spreadsheets and start looking at the people who are supposed to be making the magic happen.
