Just north of the Missouri line, Highway 17 cuts through a long stretch of nothing. There's a rest stop there—just a cinder block building with a flickering fluorescent light and a payphone that nobody's used in thirty years. I stopped there once, around two in the morning, because the rain was coming down so hard I couldn't see the road. The building was empty, or so I thought. But the women's room had a cradle in it.
