The Cradle in the Attic at the Roanoke Inn

October 1998. The Roanoke Inn, a faded motor court off Route 41 in western Kentucky. Luna checks in late, the only guest. The room is musty, the wallpaper yellowed, the parking lot empty. Around 2 a.m., she hears a baby crying from the attic above the lobby. The innkeeper, a gaunt woman in a floral dress, tells her there is no attic. Later, Luna finds a door behind a curtain in the hallway. The stairs lead up to a dusty nursery. A cradle rocks there, empty. The crying stops. And then she sees the small handprint on the window.
