The Cradle in the Room Above the Garage at the Whispering Pines Motel

It was the summer of 2005, and I was helping a friend clean out the old Whispering Pines Motel outside of Mineral Springs, Oklahoma. The owner had died, and her son just wanted the place emptied before it got condemned. Room 12 was locked from the inside. We had to break the door down. Inside, a cradle sat in the middle of the floor, rocking slowly, the air cold as a meat locker. And lying on the pillow—a blue knit onesie, still warm. The kind a baby would wear. But the motel had been closed for three years. No one had been inside. No one except whoever had been watching from the closet, their breath fogging the slats.
