Millionaire Harry Thaw had just killed famed architect Stanford White, in front of rows and rows of witnesses and a stageful of chorus girls. The murder became known as the crime of the century, and word of it spread throughout New York society and beyond.Thaw would claim that he had killed White to avenge his wife Evelyn Nesbit. She said that White had raped her.
