The Cross and the Crown - Week 8

from Eastview Baptist Church Teaching Podcast · host Eastview Baptist Church

The Cross and the Crown Week 8 – Text: Mark 16:12-20Big Idea: Jesus calls His followers to proclaim His resurrection with boldness, power, and clarity—because the story isn’t over, it’s just beginning. **Disclaimer**INTRODUCTION: The End That Isn’t the EndThink of the long ending of Mark like an extra scene at the end of a movie. (An “alternate” ending)It helps tie things together and fits with the rest of the story—but it wasn’t part of the original script. It’s helpful, but we should remember where it came from.·       Early Church Fathers like Irenaeus (around 180 AD) quoted from the long ending, which means it was already in use very early.·       Reformers like John Calvin and Martin Luther included the long ending in their Bibles, but they were careful to interpret it through the lens of the rest of Scripture.·       Modern scholars like Bruce Metzger and N.T. Wright acknowledge that it probably wasn’t original, but that it doesn’t contradict the truth of the resurrection. Cohesion In All of Scripture – From Genesis 1:1-Revelation 22:21Introduction: There is a war. There is, since the fall (Genesis 3), a battle for our souls. Take Heart – Revelation 12:7-12(emphasis verse 11). The battle has been won. Jesus has defeated sin and death. When we see the cohesion, that scripture is a singular library made from many books, then we can more clearly see the promise of Jesus throughout all of scripture. The Old Testament is the New Testament CONCEALED. The New Testament is the Old Testament REVEALED. Teaching Movements:1. From Doubt to Declaration: Jesus Meets Us Where We AreScriptures: Mark 16:12–14 | Luke 24:13–35 | John 20:24–29The post-resurrection appearances are marked by initial disbelief and Jesus’ patient, personal approach.Whether it’s Thomas’ doubts, the disciples’ fear, or the Emmaus travelers’ confusion—Jesus moves toward them.Application: Jesus is not offended by your doubts—He meets you in them to lead you to faith and mission.“Did not our hearts burn within us while He talked with us?” — Luke 24:32 2. Commissioned with Power: This Gospel Will Go GlobalScriptures: Mark 16:15–18 | Matthew 28:16–20 | Luke 24:44–49Jesus doesn’t just rise—He sends. This isn’t just a suggestion; it’s a cosmic commissioning: to go, preach, baptize, and disciple all nations.Signs follow the message—not as magic tricks, but as evidence that the resurrection power is alive and active.Application: The mission isn’t reserved for the elite—it’s for all believers, empowered by the Holy Spirit.“Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation.” — Mark 16:15 3. The Story Continues: Resurrection People in a Broken WorldScriptures: Mark 16:19–20 | Luke 24:50–53 | Revelation 12:11Jesus ascends, but the Church doesn’t retreat. The disciples preach everywhere, and the Lord confirms the word with power. The battle is won—yet the war for hearts rages on. We are sent into the world as witnesses, warriors, and worshipers.Application: You’re not just saved from something—you’re saved for something. The world needs the hope you carry.“And they went out and preached everywhere, while the Lord worked with them.” — Mark 16:20 Conclusion:Why it all matters? All of scripture points to Jesus. He was present in the creation. He intervened(Christophanies) throughout the Old Testament storyline. The Prophets foretold of His upcoming arrival. John the Baptist announces His arrival. The Great Commission deploys us into the spread of Resurrection life.Gospel Summary:Jesus Died — For our sinJesus Was Buried — In our placeJesus Rose Again — To give us eternal lifeJesus Is Calling — Will you follow?Next Steps:Believe — You’ve placed your faith in Jesus.Be Baptized — Take your next step publicly and boldly.Belong — Join a community of believers. Don’t walk alone.Be Sent — You are now a messenger of hope.
