The Cross Before Me

from Your Nightly Prayer: Evening Prayers for Christians · host Your Nightly Prayer

What do we celebrate most in our lives? It’s easy to boast in accomplishments, milestones, relationships, or personal success. Culture trains us to highlight what we’ve built, earned, or achieved. Yet Paul boldly declares that there is only one thing worth boasting about—the cross of Jesus Christ. At first glance, that feels counterintuitive. The cross was an instrument of suffering and shame. But through it came redemption, freedom, and life. What looked like defeat became victory. What looked like loss became eternal gain. When Paul says he boasts in the cross, he is not glorifying suffering—he is glorifying the Savior who conquered sin and death through it. The cross reminds us that our salvation was free to us but costly to God. Jesus bore the weight of our sin, canceled our debt, and made us spiritually alive. When we center our hearts on the cross, pride fades. Gratitude rises. Perspective shifts. The world loses its grip, and Christ becomes our focus. Tonight is an invitation to re-center your heart. If distractions, worries, or ambitions have crowded your vision, return to the foot of the cross. There, you will find mercy. There, you will find power. There, you will find the reason for true confidence—not in yourself, but in what Christ has done. Main Takeaways True boasting is not prideful when it centers on what Christ has done. The cross reveals the immense cost of our redemption and the depth of God’s love. Spiritual life flows from remembering that we were made alive through Christ’s sacrifice. Keeping the cross central reshapes our priorities and conversations. The message of the cross still carries saving power today. TONIGHT'S SCRIPTURE “May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world”—Galatians 6:14 Your Evening Prayer Father,Re-center my heart tonight on the cross of Jesus Christ. Forgive me for the times I’ve been more focused on my own accomplishments than on Your sacrifice. Help me remember the high cost of my redemption and the love that held Jesus on that cross. Remind me that I was once spiritually lost, and through Christ, I have been made alive. Teach me to value what You value and to speak boldly about the hope found in the cross. Let my confidence rest not in myself, but in the finished work of Jesus. In His powerful name, Amen.
