The Cruelest Miles | Sled Race Against an Epidemic

The children of Nome, Alaska were dying off from an epidemic of diphtheria: where the throat closes off and you die of suffocation. Everything was frozen up in that January of 1925 and the only way to get the diphtheria antitoxin to them was by sled dog. The 20-pound cylinder of serum was passed to the first of twenty mushers and more than 100 dogs who relayed the package 674 miles from Nenana to Nome. This podcast covers the last few musher’s heroic stories, as the last stretch was the most treacherous part. There were 70 mph winds that brought the temperature down -85° F.
