The Crying Well at the Barlow House

May 1997, Barlow House, out past the gravel pits on Old Mill Road. It was a foreclosure, boarded up for eighteen years, but the realtor said someone had been leaving flowers at the edge of the well in the backyard. Luna went to photograph it for the historical society. The well had been capped in 1979 after a child fell in—or was placed in, depending on who you asked. She took photos in the afternoon light, and when she developed them, every frame showed a girl standing at the well's edge, facing away, her dress wet and clinging. But the real horror, Luna says, came when she went back the next night. Not to see the girl—but because she heard the water moving.
