Well, Edward Page Mitchell who was born in Maine in 1852 was an editorial and short story writer for The Sun, a daily newspaper in New York City. His stories appeared in the newspaper without a byline. So his work went mostly forgotten until a lot of investigative work by science fiction historian and fellow author Sam Moskowitz in the 1970s unearthed these groundbreaking stories.
