Captured by its followers, she is bound to an ancient stone altar. Around her, masked figures chant as drums echo through the night. Then, silence falls. A lone figure slowly emerges from the darkness. Diego Santoro. Some describe him as a former healer, others as nothing more than a charlatan. To his followers, however, he is a mysterious guru whose true origins remain unknown. Without saying a word, Santoro places his hand on Winter's forehead. A discreet device emits a strange audio frequency that blends with the chanting. Gradually, terrifying visions overwhelm her: crowds stripped of their free will, moving as a single entity. Moments later, she loses consciousness. Meanwhile, Special Agent Foulder arrives in Brazil to investigate Winter Morgan's disappearance. Before long, one name keeps resurfacing throughout his investigation: Diego Santoro. The testimonies are scarce and contradictory, but everyone seems to fear the mysterious guru. Just as a former follower finally agrees to speak, a gunshot shatters the silence. Realizing that he has become a target himself, Foulder is forced to flee without obtaining any useful information. The only credible lead eventually comes from an anthropology professor. According to him, Santoro has spent years studying the effects of specific sound frequencies on the human brain, convinced that they could one day be used to influence the behavior of entire populations. After several days of investigation, Foulder finds neither Winter Morgan nor Diego Santoro, who appears to have already left Brazil. With no evidence to pursue, he returns to the United States carrying little more than an almost empty case file, convinced that this investigation is only just beginning.
