From the Home Sliced News Center, this is the Daily Slice for Thursday, January 27, 2022. I'm D Ray Knight, and this is what's going on. Douglas School Officials say a teenager was arrested after being found with a gun at a Tuesday night basketball game. The school resource officer was summoned after a staff member noticed four individuals who smelled alcohol.
The officer spoke with a group, and the Box Elder Police Department was asked for assistance. After an investigation, two of the four individuals were found to have consumed alcohol under age. Police also arrested a 19-year-old after a loaded gun was found in his waistband. School Officials say none of the individuals involved were Douglas School District students.
Governor Gnome has scaled back the Custer State Park campsite proposal. With more, here's Amy Rose. Governor Kristi Gnome has scaled back plans to expand campsites at Custer State Park after her initial proposal hit resistance in the Republican-controlled legislature. The Republican governor's office shared new plans on Wednesday with lawmakers that would have the number of campsites from the more than 176 that were proposed.
It would also cut the proposal to $5 million after an initial $10 million ask, as well as relocate the proposed campground away from the Wildlife Loop Road. Republican lawmakers had soured on the plan after privately owned campgrounds in the area, spoke out against it. And conservation groups raised concerns about how wildlife would be affected. The South Dakota House has passed a proposal to push schools to increase average teacher compensation from what it was in 2017.
The bill easily passed the Republican-controlled House with just a single dissenting vote and will next proceed to the Senate. It would extend for three years a requirement that school districts boost average teacher compensation for what it was in 2017. Schools would risk losing state funding if they failed to increase pay, but they can also apply for a waiver. A South Dakota House committee has approved a trans-athlete ban.
Amy Rose has more. A South Dakota House committee has approved a proposal from Governor Kristi Gnome to ban transgender women and girls from competing in school sports leagues that match their gender identity. All 11 Republicans on the House state affairs voted in favor of the bill. The governor has cast it as protecting fairness in women's sports, but advocates for transgender people decried the proposal as bullying that would deprive them of an opportunity to compete and belong to a team.
South Dakota could be the 10th Republican-controlled state to adopt such a ban on transgender women or girls. In national news, President Joe Biden says 14.5 million Americans got private health insurance this year under Obamacare thanks to health from his administration. Biden said Thursday, health care should be a right, not a privilege, and a record number of people now have coverage under the Affordable Care Act. But progress could prove fleeting if congressional Democrats remain deadlocked over Biden's social agenda package.
Biden's earlier coronavirus relief bill had been providing generous subsidy increases. That enhanced financial assistance is temporary. The assistance will go away at the end of 2022 without congressional action to extend additional years or to make it permanent. In international news, the Kremlin says the U.S.
rejection of Russia's main demands to resolve the crisis over Ukraine leaves little ground for optimism, but added that dialogue was still possible. Tensions have soared recently as the United States and its NATO allies expressed concern that a buildup of about 100,000 Russian troops near Ukraine signaled Moscow planned to invade. But the U.S. and the Western alliance firmly rejected any concessions on Moscow's main points Wednesday.
All eyes are now on how President Vladimir Putin will respond. And this was your Daily Slice for Thursday, January 27, 2022. The Daily Slice is a production of Home Slice Media Group hosted by D-Ray Night and Amy Rose, produced by Mark Houston, engineered by Chris Jackways. I'm D-Ray Night.
