TW - Suicide, Death, Abuse of Mental Health Patients The South Carolina State Hospital is in Columbia, South Carolina, and it is the former home of the South Carolina State Mental Health Hospital.  It was also known as the South Carolina Lunatic Asylum.  If you have lived in Columbia or the surrounding areas, you might have heard it referred to as “Bull Street.”  I went to college at USC, and I moved to Columbia in 2010, and I knew the building as “Bull Street.”  If anyone brought up “Bull Street,” we all knew they were talking about the Mental Health Hospital.
