Jesus taught this clearly in John 15. He said, "I am the vine; you are the branches. If you abide in Me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from Me you can do nothing*" (John 15:5). When we remain intimately connected to Christ (the "vine"), our works are alive and Spirit-filled, and we naturally bear fruit. But when we disconnect – even if we continue the outward form of ministry – we "can do nothing," meaning our efforts become barren.
