The Day My Soul Said Enough

from Podcast Soulutions With Karol Stories That Shift · host Karol Houtman

For years, I lived like a person who had forgotten she was allowed to be happy.I thought grief was supposed to be forever. I thought numbness was wisdom. I thought protecting myself from feeling meant protecting myself from pain.I was wrong. And the day I realized that changed everything. When Survival Becomes a PrisonHere's what no one tells you about loss: sometimes the hardest part isn't the losing. It's remembering that you're still allowed to live.I lost everything. Not just my husband - everything. I went from having a life to having to rebuild a home from scratch so the man I loved could come there to die. He didn't want to die in a hospital, and I was going to make sure he didn't have to.So I did it. I built a sanctuary for dying when I had nothing left to build with. I didn't complain. No one saw me cry. I did what needed to be done and what my heart told me to do.Looking back now, I'm just realizing what I accomplished. What I survived. It was extraordinary. But for years after, I became an expert at existing without really living. I moved through days like someone underwater—everything muted, distant, safe. I convinced myself that feeling nothing was better than feeling everything. But what I was really doing was building a prison out of protection. I was so busy keeping pain out that I locked joy out too. I spent twelve years apologizing for being human during impossible times. Carrying guilt for not being "enough" when I was barely breathing. Making myself small to keep others comfortable with my imperfect way of surviving. That's not healing. That's hiding from the truth of your own strength. The Breakthrough MomentThen came the day when something inside me, my soul said: "Enough."Not angry enough. Not frustrated enough. Just... enough. My soul had finally gotten tired of being afraid of its own feelings. It wasn't dramatic. There was no lightning bolt. Just a quiet realization that I had been grieving not just what I'd lost, but my own right to feel alive again.I realized I had a choice: I could keep carrying this weight, or I could choose something different.I chose different. What Freedom Actually Looks LikeHere's what I discovered when I finally gave myself permission to live again:Grief doesn't have to be forever. It can be love. It can be gratitude. It can be the foundation you build joy on, not the ceiling that keeps you down. You don't need permission to feel good again. You don't need to apologize for healing. You don't need to stay small to honor what you've lost.Your survival story is actually your strength story. All those years of "just getting through" weren't wasted time—they were proof of something extraordinary. When I built a home from nothing so my husband could die with dignity, when I held myself together while everything fell apart, when I survived being being judged for grieving imperfectly—I wasn't just surviving. I was showing a kind of strength most people will never have to discover in themselves. You can honor the past while embracing the future. Missing someone doesn't mean you can't love your life. Remembering what was doesn't mean you can't create what could be.The Shift That Changes EverythingI stopped asking "Why did this happen to me?" and started asking "What did I accomplish in the impossible?"I stopped apologizing for taking up space and started marveling at what I'd built from nothing.I stopped treating my heart like it was broken and started treating it like it was powerful—because it had already proven it could create sanctuary from devastation.I stopped being ashamed of how I survived and started being amazed that I survived at all. When you've built a home for dying with your bare hands and your breaking heart, when you've held space for love in the midst of loss, when you've been extraordinary in moments that would break most people—that's not something to apologize for. That's something to honor. That shift? That's where the magic happens.Your Permission SlipIf you've been carrying grief longer than grief has been serving you...If you've been apologizing for surviving imperfectly...If you've been waiting for permission to feel good again. This is it. This is your permission.Your story isn't over. In fact, I think the best parts are just beginning. You are allowed to feel joy even if someone you love is gone. You are allowed to build something beautiful from something broken. You are allowed to stop apologizing for being human in impossible circumstances. You are allowed to choose freedom over fear. The Choice Is Always YoursGrief will take as much of your life as you let it. But it doesn't get to decide how your story ends. You do.You can choose to see yourself as someone who lost everything, or someone who survived everything. You can choose to live like someone who is forever broken, or someone who has been beautifully rebuilt. You can choose to carry the weight of what was, or create the lightness of what could be.The choice is always yours. And you're stronger than you think. What's Next?Today, I hope to help others make that same choice. Through my podcast "Sitting with Silence," through these stories, through the reminder that your hardest chapters don't have to be your final chapters.Because here's what I know for sure: the world needs you whole. It needs you healed. It needs you taking up space and feeling your feelings and building something beautiful from whatever pieces you're working with. What would you choose if you knew you were allowed to choose freedom? What would you create if you stopped apologizing for taking up space? — your courage might be exactly what someone else needs to hear. This is a public episode.
