The Day of the Lord Already Happened? | Amos 8

What does the Day of the Lord have to do with the death of Jesus Christ? And why does Amos 8 speak of the Day of the Lord as darkness and judgment?In Amos 8, God warns Israel about the coming Day of the Lord—a day of judgment, darkness, and punishment for sin. But the New Testament reveals something astonishing: the judgment that believers deserve fell upon Jesus Christ at the cross.When Jesus was crucified, darkness covered the land from noon until three in the afternoon. This echoes Amos's description of the Day of the Lord: “I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight” (Amos 8:9). The darkness surrounding Christ's death points to the judgment of God being poured out upon Jesus as he bore the sins of his people.This changes how Christians should think about the future Day of the Lord and the second coming of Jesus. For those who are in Christ, the coming Day of the Lord is not a day of condemnation. Christ has already borne their punishment.
