dattrax: Just bought about 25 new tracks from stompy.com and traxsource.com plus a few older ones and banged out this mix. 3rd track in is "In Too Deep", a brand new Phil Collins tribute bootleg by Toronto's Jason Barham. Happy Retirement Mr. Collins. This is the 2nd mix made with the Traktor Kontrol S4 (pictured top). Starting to get used to the basic functions. Pretty good response time on the jog wheels, though not precise when you release for cueing. Nothing beats the tactile feel of time-coded vinyl, whether with Serato-Rane or Traktor Pro2. Also really like the feel of Numark's NS7.Native Instruments made a good product. Heavy duty construction, cool black enamel finish, rubberized EQ and EFX knobs, good spacing, and a larger footprint than regular controllers. Love having an internal soundcard that records straight into the computer. No more lugging a mini-disc player to friends' places. Still visiting my best friend and DJ partner Jim's serato-rane-vinyl set-up though. Still like that best.Main complaint: the pitch/tempo faders and crossfader are plasticky and too loose. The pitch faders also need a longer physical range. And although the jog wheels have slight magnetic weighting, adjustable tension would be nice.I got tons of static pops and clicks when attached to my laptop, even after following NI's optimization suggestions. Plugging into my desktop fixed that completely.Haven't touched sync, hot cues, sampling or looping yet. With the type of house we spin, probably won't use much of that anyway. Still working out how to assign the EFX boards to any channel rather than having them locked. NI support will sort it out. They also threw in a free Traktor Pro 2 upgrade worth $80 USD, which was a great bonus. Very happy with this company overall. Here's their site: native-instruments.comThis will tide me over until I can afford the dream setup: Traktor Pro 2, Pioneer DJM2000, two Technics 1200s, two Pioneer CDJ-2000s, and proper JBL speakers. That's probably $10k, so still a pipe dream. The S4 is a solid poor man's version at a tenth of that cost.---------------How do we describe the dattrax sound?
