The Deserter Crisis: How Thousands of Soldiers Are Fleeing the Front Lines in Ukraine

In this episode, Elvira Bary explains why thousands of soldiers are fleeing the Russia-Ukraine war — and why desertion means very different things on each side. Ukrainian defenders may break after years of service, exhaustion, bad commanders, untreated wounds, and no clear rotation. Russian soldiers face a darker trap: mobilization, forced contracts, pressure from commanders, punishment that sends them back to the front, and a state that treats them as bodies to be returned to war. This video looks at who deserts, why they run, how they survive in hiding, how Ukraine and Russia handle the crisis differently, and what both countries will face when the war finally ends.
