The Difference Between Peace and Avoidance
from Metanoia Madness
Are you actually at peace with something, or have you just gotten really good at avoiding it? Sometimes walking away is exactly what we need. We leave the relationship, create the boundary, stop going somewhere, or remove ourselves from an environment that was constantly disturbing us. And suddenly, everything gets quiet. But quiet and peace aren’t always the same thing. In this episode of Metanoia Madness, Nicholas explores the difference between genuine peace and avoidance, and why creating distance from something doesn’t necessarily mean it has stopped having power over us. Sometimes distance gives us the space we need to heal. Other times, we slowly begin organizing our lives around making sure we never have to feel what something brings up in us again. From the outside, those choices can look exactly the same. This conversation explores boundaries, emotional avoidance, protecting your peace, triggers, self-trust, and the difference between being affected by something and being controlled by it. Because healing doesn’t mean becoming emotionally unaffected. You can miss someone without needing them back in your life. You can feel something when an old memory resurfaces without believing you’ve gone backward. You can understand exactly what something brings up in you and still decide that the door deserves to remain closed. Being at peace with something doesn’t require welcoming it back. Maybe the real question is whether your distance comes from clarity or from the fear of what might happen if that distance disappeared. Avoidance needs the thing to stay away. Peace can still choose distance, but it doesn’t need everything around you to remain quiet in order for you to be okay. Maybe peace isn’t a life where nothing disturbs us. Maybe it’s trusting ourselves enough to know that being disturbed doesn’t have to decide what happens next. JOURNAL PROMPT Think about something you’ve intentionally created distance from. If you knew you could handle whatever you felt, would you still choose this distance? Don’t worry about what you’re supposed to do with the answer. Just notice what it is. And more importantly, why. AFFIRMATIONS I can trust myself with what I feel. I don’t have to reopen a door to prove that I have healed. My feelings can exist without making my decisions for me. I can choose distance from clarity instead of fear. My peace does not depend on everything around me being quiet.
