Luna remembers a late October night in 1998, when her high school friend Grace asked her to drive out to Pender's Hollow — a dead-end gravel lane outside of Oakdale, Illinois, where kids went to drink and make out. But that night, Grace wasn't interested in beer or boys. She had found something in her late grandmother's cedar chest: a photograph of a woman who looked exactly like Grace, standing in front of a house that shouldn't exist. The photo was dated 1923. Luna drove her anyway, past the No Trespassing signs, past the collapsed barn, to where the road ended in a thicket of blackberry brambles. And Grace got out of the car.
