The Disaster of Bergen op Zoom

The fourth and final of these episodes over Christmas 2024/early 2025 which look at random tales related to Waterloo. This week we look at the disastrous assault on the Dutch fortress of Bergen op Zoom in March 1814. The reason for looking at this battle is that many of the British troops who were engaged in the attack would be at Waterloo the following year, and it will be helpful to have this episode to refer back to when we come to look at those regiments in detail.One addendum – after I’d finished writing and recording the episode I came across the History of the 33rd Foot – available free for download here – https://archive.org/details/history33...Pages 199-219 contain some further insights, especially from Major Edward Parkinson of the 33rd, that I think are interesting and would have been useful to include in the episode.
