The Discourse on Living Happily

from Dhamma Audio · host Sugata Vinayo

The Discourse on Living HappilyThis was spoken by the Blessed One, spoken by the Arahant; thus have I heard— “Monks, a bhikkhu endowed with two qualities lives happily in this very life, unafflicted, undismayed, unfeverish; with the breaking up of the body, after death, a good destination is to be expected. Which two? Guarding the doors of the senses, and knowing moderation in food. Monks, a bhikkhu endowed with these two qualities lives happily in this very life, unafflicted, undismayed, unfeverish; with the breaking up of the body, after death, a good destination is to be expected.” The Blessed One spoke this meaning. Therein it is said: “The eye, ear, and nose, the tongue, body, and also the mind; These are the doors of a bhikkhu here that are well-guarded. And knowing moderation in food, and restrained in the senses; He attains physical happiness, mental happiness, happiness. With a body not burning, with a mind not burning; Whether by day or by night, such a one lives in happiness.” This meaning was also spoken by the Blessed One; thus have I heard.
